The Chickens at Valleygold Farms
Having shown, raised and bred Golden Retrievers for the past 25 years I knew that the one factor I could not control easily would be the infection of my dogs
with Lyme Disease. As my kennel has grown since the children have gone from home I worried about that little “Deer Mouse Tick”. Having read a lot about the advantage of free range chickens and there consumption of my favorite “Deer Mouse
Tick” I decided to give it a go.
The first purchase was 25 baby chicks from a reliable hatchery that produced “Show Quality” Single Comb Rhode Island Red Chickens. This was the tip of that Ice
Berg. After that there were several purchases of adult chickens. For Bantams we have “Partridge Cochin Bantams” and for a larger variety we have Gold Laced Cochin. The term Cochin designates that they have feathers on legs and feet. “Little
Slippers”
The immediate advantage has been the noticeable loss of “bugs” (flying and crawling) at my home. My friendly dogs have a front row seat to the “chicken antics” that get performed daily. We have racing
roosters, hens proclaiming the arrival of an egg and many more assorted chicken antics. Plus we do not have to worry about sleeping late as the roosters proclaim the arrival of every morning.
